These people are trying to see Patti Smith. Like myself and Daisy they turned up too late to be allowed into the packed Royal Festival Hall branch of Foyles bookstore. Patti was there for a signing of her new book "Just Kids", but she was also due to perform a couple of songs. We could just about see her through the window, standing in front of a microphone and a scrum of photographers. I couldn't hear anything apart from occasional ripples of applause. She may have been reading from the book. I'd just about given up on this when I noticed that the shop had another entrance inside the foyer that leads up to the main hall. We still weren't allowed in, but the doors were open and we got round in time to hear her sing "Because the Night" in front of the hushed and reverential crowd. Daisy wanted to take a photo. I suggested she could go on my shoulders and take one of the singer, but she said she wanted to take a photo of her shoes. She did in the end agree with my opinion that Patti Smith might be more interesting than her shoes - she could after all take a photo of her shoes any time - and I hoisted her onto my shoulders. Here's Daisy's photograph of Patti Smith...
She looked at it and told me it was rubbish. Sadly I'm inclined to agree. I don't think this is Patti Smith. Nor is it Daisy's shoes. Still at least, happily for Daisy, she will have another opportunity to get a photograph of her shoes.
