September 18th - Day 153

In the spring of 2006, at three o'clock one morning, I was sitting on our sofa holding a wakeful four month old Daisy, when I saw a pig in a baby blue suit getting chased by a minotaur in a leotard. The chase started in a park, continued in the stairwell and balcony of a block of flats, through a market and around a fountain, where the pig stopped running away and jumped into the arms of the minotaur. Then the minotaur cooked the pig's head. The words "You could easily have me" by "Metronomy" appeared on the screen and MTV2 had introduced me to my new favourite band. The song was a manic instrumental, driven by joyful and dirty guitar and keyboard riffs.
Tonight Claire and I saw the band live at The Forum, Kentish Town. As the venue filled up we entertained ourselves by counting people older than us on the fingers of one hand. Not many people, it seemed, got into Metronomy whilst trying to make a baby fall asleep. Undetered by our senior status we pushed close to the stage and tried to dance, which was hard, not because we're old, but because our feet were stuck to the sticky, beery floor. A joyful evening of electro-rock was had by all...well, obviously I can't speak for everyone, but we enjoyed the gig and the band, in their dark tops and flashing lamps, looked happy, especially Anna the drummer who drums and smiles at the same time.
