Today was the first of several where I'd be staying south of the river for a week or so (apart from tomorrow when I already have tickets for The Forum). This is because The South London Press have very kindly given me the opportunity to promote the project by having a seven day diary of my escapades published in the paper in a couple of weeks time - December 11th, all being well.
First stop was the Birds Nest pub in Deptford, a convivial establishment of diverse ages, urban cultures and hats. And moving backpacks with people hanging from under them. This is because the Birds Nest doubles as a hostel, which is accessable through the pub. Coincidentally, tonight's first act, The Sysiphians, were also visitors to these shores. They're a French Roots Reggae duo - Ras Hassenti (chant and melodica) and Puppa Rico (sax), backed by Mat providing the drums and bass on sound. The main act tonight was Celt Islam, promoting a new album. And the whole evening was a benefit for Unite Against Fascism. I had to head off before the main guys, but by then had thoroughly enjoyed the chilled out dub grooves of The Sysiphians.
