The Shepherds Bush Empire was built in 1903 and was originally a music hall. The first performers were the pre-Chaplin and Laurel Fred Karno Troupe. In 1953 the venue was bought by the BBC and became known as the BBC Television Theatre. Over the next 38 years programmes that were made there included Hancock's Half Hour, The Black and White Minstrel Show, Crackerjack, The Basil Brush Show, Wogan and (maybe the last time The Damned were here?) The Old Grey Whistle Test. Since 1991 it has solely been a music venue.
