November 26th - Day 222
Today was the first of several where I'd be staying south of the river for a week or so (apart from tomorrow when I already have tickets for The Forum). This is because The South London Press have very kindly given me the opportunity to promote the project by having a seven day diary of my escapades published in the paper in a couple of weeks time - December 11th, all being well.
First stop was the Birds Nest pub in Deptford, a convivial establishment of diverse ages, urban cultures and hats. And moving backpacks with people hanging from under them. This is because the Birds Nest doubles as a hostel, which is accessable through the pub. Coincidentally, tonight's first act, The Sysiphians, were also visitors to these shores. They're a French Roots Reggae duo - Ras Hassenti (chant and melodica) and Puppa Rico (sax), backed by Mat providing the drums and bass on sound. The main act tonight was Celt Islam, promoting a new album. And the whole evening was a benefit for Unite Against Fascism. I had to head off before the main guys, but by then had thoroughly enjoyed the chilled out dub grooves of The Sysiphians.

December 4th - Day 230
Earlier this year a very special picture book was created (with the help of teachers, staff, parents and carers and members of the local community) by the children of Ivydale Primary School.
"The project started with a number of artists, writers and illustrators working alongside the children of the school to create a story book written entirely by the children themselves. Each development in the story and each design of the pages were decided by the children. The book they created is called Bob and the Magical Globe." That is quoted from the London Bubble Theatre website and it was they who collaborated with the school and the children on the next step - to turn the book into a stage version.
Tonight, after nine weeks of rehearsal, was the public show at The Albany Theatre in Deptford. Frankly I didn't know what was going on and it was brilliant. A grinning, psychedelic feast of colour and movement and sound. The songs were generally existing pieces of music imaginatively re-jigged for the show. My favourite was the punky closing number originally called The Motorbike Song (need to check original artist), that had the kids gloriously chanting the eponymous chorus "Bob, Bob and The Magic Globe!! Bob, Bob and the Magic Globe!!" (that's what it sounded like to me anyway).
The link below details the transformation from book to stage, chronicled by Adam from the London Bubble Theatre...

April 2nd - Day 349
"Itinerant gypsy-folk-punk-mariachi-acoustic splendidness" from Wide Eyed Order, above, were followed by Smokey Bastard, below, "a mixture of seven English punks, folkies and bewildered musicians", though they numbered eight tonight, as did Wide Eyed Order. Both bands were not so much squashed in the corner of The Birds Nest pub in Deptford, as piled high into it. The former's brass section reminded us of early Dexys Midnight Runners. The latter had us feeling nostalgic for mid-eighties folky punkers such as The Pogues and The Men They Couldn't Hang.. Both had the place bouncing and jumping (two very different things, bouncing and jumping. Jumping is the more controlled of the two. That's why in atheletics, for example, there is a triple jump, but not a triple bounce).
